Why I'm Drawn to Feature Writing
Data: 09/29/2026 In my opinion, feature writing has one major strength over news writing: it has room to breathe. News writing has to be fast, objective, and stripped down to the most essential facts, which is valuable, but it doesn't leave much space for personality, description, or emotion. Feature writing lets a writer slow down and actually tell a story, using scene-setting, quotes, and structure that feels almost narrative. The weakness, though, is that this same freedom can become a trap, a feature article can easily wander, lose focus, or feel indulgent if the writer isn't disciplined about sticking to a clear angle. News writing forces discipline through its structure (inverted pyramid, tight word count), while feature writing has to build that discipline in on its own. Personally, I enjoy feature writing more, but I think practicing news writing first has made me a more focused feature writer.
