A Little Better Than We Have Been

This quote from Gordon B. Hinckley talks about small, steady improvement, being a little more kind, a little more merciful, a little more forgiving, rather than expecting some dramatic overnight change. I think editing principles actually map onto that idea really well. Good editing isn't about tearing a whole piece apart and starting over, it's about small, deliberate improvements: cutting an unnecessary word here, clarifying a vague sentence there. Living the gospel feels similar to me, it's not about achieving perfection in one draft, it's about revising ourselves a little each day, catching our own "awkward phrasing" in how we treat people, and being willing to make small edits to our character over time. Just like a good writer keeps revising instead of settling for a rough first draft, I think we're meant to keep revising ourselves too.
